Presentation Strategies
Storyboard
Using a storyboard is a creative way for students to keep track and organize the main ideas of a unit or lesson. Students have to draw a visual representation of the main idea or event and below the image write a summary of the idea or event. Since it utilizes both a visual and writing components it should help students retain the information, while also organizing the information in a clear way. Projects & Presentations Projects and presentations are staples in the academic world. Students will need to be able to efficiently and effectively create presentations and complete projects in order to succeed academically. Students need to have a good understanding of the topic in order to present their topic. It also helps prepare students to speak in public, which is an incredibly useful skill to have that is applicable in the real world. It also provides a meaningful way for students to collaborate. Working well in a group setting is important for students to learn that has real world applications. There are also many new and innovative technologies that students can utilize for a presentation, such as Prezi and Piktochart. |
Communication Strategies:
|
Think, pair, share
I would actually a variant of this communication strategy, think write, pair, share. This is a great method that requires students to think and analyze a question, write their thoughts down in a clear and coherent way, discuss the question and their response with a partner, and finally share their ideas with the class. What I like most about this strategy is that it can be used in many different situations. It can be used as an introduction to unit as well as a formative assessment in the middle of a lesson. Jigsaw The jigsaw strategy encourages close reading, collaboration, as well as providing students with leading their own learning. In this strategy a text is broken up into sections and each section is given to a group of students. The groups are tasked with reading their section, discussing in their groups the main ideas, themes, and points, and then teaching the rest of the class these aspects of their section. Similar to the think, pair, share activity I like how this can be used for any type of text and in multiple situations. |
Organization Strategies
Timeline
Timelines are an organizational tool that is often overlooked because they are so common within history. However, they are an excellent way to organize the main ideas of a historical period or figure. Aside from providing information in a very organized way, they also offer students a visual layout of events. Students can see what led to a certain point in history, or what caused a historical figure to take a specific action. Students would create their own timeline for the lesson or unit, allowing them to write about events and figures in their own words, and will organize it in a linear manner. Human Timeline The human timeline is an excellent variant to the traditional timeline. It combines the timeline with the jigsaw strategy. You would take a historical figure, period, or event and then break it up into sections. You would assign a student, or a group, a specific moment on the timeline, which they will research in order to present it to the class. Then you set up the timeline on the floor of the classroom and have students stand next to their section. Student will then present their sections to the class in chronological order. |
Collection Strategy
Finding Primary sources
Primary sources are extremely important and valuable to historians. One of our jobs as history teachers is to teach our students the importance of these documents, but we also have to teach them how to find them on their own. This website provides students with several online resources for finding, evaluating, and using primary sources. Document Analysis Once the primary sources are found students will need to analyze these documents. There is specific information that students need to be aware of, and locate, within these primary sources in order to properly understand use them. A great way to do this is by to creating Document Analysis Templates. This can be done by the teacher as well as the students. |
